Round 2 of Storyboarding

After a discussion and realization that I am trying to put too much of the plot too early in the film, I readjusted the opening and story board. I would like to focus more on the case and the folder (conflict). This requires more props and the lightening will be important to make it suspenseful and tense.

Storyboard Time

The thought of story boarding annoys me because it takes up so much time and I am one of those people who think of different things to add as I go along. But I also love it because my ideas are more organized than scattered and I can visually see it out better.

While story boarding, I had difficulty starting; I knew what I wanted but didn't know how to properly draw it out. After I got past the first three, it became a lot easier to collect my thoughts to portray on paper. I left two spaces on the first page because I had an idea but am not sure about inserting it but later decided to place it there and put maybe. I plan to test the waters out when I get to the editing stage, which I already know is going to be a beast to tackle. I also realized that I may not make the limit so added some more clips just in case I need to make more time. This way, when I am editing, I know what I was thinking and where to place it.

I plan to do more research on whether it would be better to show the messages or have a phone call to continue introducing the conflict. It would also start to give the audience the idea that Agent Blake is somehow directly involved in the conflict. I want to create suspense to ensure the audience will be intrigued enough to continue to watch. The first few minutes are vital to determine if the audience will stay to see the outcome or are not intrigued enough.

Overview Outline

Throughout the day, I outlined what I will need to get done and what props I would need. This will help me stay organized and keep everything listed out.

Here I explained my overall idea for the opening with details of shots and the scenes.
I would like to have two separate scenes with a montage at the beginning and then end with the conflict being presented through the case file.
Towards the bottom is the list of props I would need within these scenes which I need to acquire to have my opening idea go as planned

This page shows an outline of the idea of the case file which I will need to make to show the viewers the agency is the FBI and the case is the importance of the film.
It shows the plan/ schedule of what I need to get done including making the folder file which may take me a while seeing as I will need to make the content inside similar to actual reports to show Agent Blake's partner is the case (his murder).
I have been trying to look for music which is suspenseful to put in the beginning but has been difficult.

Character Set Up

The evolution of Agent Blake is going from a "goodie-two-shoes" to a risk taker. Since I want to start off with the conflict as my film opening, her wardrobe will slightly foreshadow her evolution.

It is typical for a short black leather jacket when characterizing a character as a risk taker so I would like to keep that same vibe. It would also foreshadow her evolution. Since she is "pure," not fully aware that someone in the agency is a murderer, she will be wearing a white shirt with blue jeans. This shows innocence towards the situation at the beginning of the film in a settle way.

Along with this look, she will keep her hair down to originally cover her face. This will also show that she is not fully confident as she tries to cover her face. It also adds suspicion to her at the beginning of the film as to who she is and her part in the murder.

Creative Process Towards Concept

It took me a few days before my concept became wholesome. After my research, I realized that adventure has a wide range which means ample ideas, which actually was more difficult for me to think of ideas.

Every idea I had was extremely cliche which I am trying to avoid. Once I realized that, I tried to think about the movies I stear more towards and why I like them...

  • the constant suspense
  • crime
  • the risk taking- obstacles
  • connection with the main character
  • putting 2 + 2 together myself
And that's when it hit me... I wanted to do something crime related but since most films show both sides and the mastermind behind the plan at the start, I wanted to keep it concealed. I want it to relate back to the game Clue because you don't know who did it and everyone is a suspect. How could I do that? A mole in the agency. Therefore, everyone is suspicious.

The third bullet will most likely be the problem for me because I am a "goodie two-shoes" and taking risks is not something I would do. But this may be of help to me after all. All the main agents are risk takers from the start and they always prove it to be justified like in the show 24 or Miss Congeniality. Why not divert from this and have the character evolve from a "goodie two-shoes" to a risk taker? It diverts it from the typical crime fiction movie. Another inspiration I took from Miss Congeniality is having my main character, main agent, as a female. In most films such as Bad Boys or 24, they keep the male as the lead or have the female as the side agent. I want my agent to be the lead and take control of the situation and case.

After thinking of it in pieces and not whole as I originally did, I was able to grasp a better concept.
Overall the story will be about a female agent , Agent Blake who is known as the "goodie two-shoes" of the office. Her partner, Agent Jackson, who is the risk taker, was murdered. The agency's main suspect is Agent Blake but she knows someone is the agency is the murderer and needs to determine who before she is arrested.

As adventure films express a theme and evolution, Agent Blake will evolve to be a better agent by taking more risks and being more open to ideas. It will also shows that it is important to chose who you trust wisely and to be careful; the people who usually betray someones trust are closest to them. Therefore, I decided to call it "Back-stabbed."

Opening up to Adventure

The opening of the film is one of the most crucial points of the movie if you ask me. Those few minutes need to be influential towards the target audience because if not, well, they will not be staying to finish the film. Adventure is a tricky genre because it plays out into other genres so there is no set way of opening these types of films. Majority of the time, the main characters are introduced but sometimes the conflict or tone is depicted instead.

Miss Congeniality Opening

The purpose of opening for Miss Congeniality is character development and background. It shows Gracie Hart in a school playground standing up to a bully with the use of violence. The way she holds her posture and confronts the bully shows she is confident with who she is and not afraid to back down.At first, it is understandable seeing that she is defending the guy she likes, but once the guy turns back to insult her helping him, she uses her violence towards him. The mise-en-scenes elements in this scene to describe her is with a tom boy look with two braids and a red shirt while the other females wore more lighter colors such as light pink and light blue. She is also reading a book rather than playing with her classmates which shows she likes to keep to herself and her hobby is reading. This portion of character development of her younger self is transitioned to an older version of herself also reading a book, two braids and dressed tom boy like. The development of character creates a connection with the viewer to have a greater understanding of her and her actions. It encourages the viewers to indulge on a journey with her and see her develop her feminine side and personality.

Bad Boys Opening

Bad Boys opens to introduce the relationship between Detectives Lowrey and Burnett which shows they do not see eye to eye often. It also introduces the action portion of the film with the long shot of the car driving with fast editing. The opening sets a tone for the rest of the movie as well, to be filled with action and comedy as well as embarking on an adventure as Detectives. It introduces Lowrey and Burnett as Detectives towards the end of the scene as detectives. As they bicker, they are able to fight and arrest the criminals attempting to steal Lowrey's expensive car. Through the further use of mise-en-scene and the dialogue, we are able to tell that Lowrey comes from money with his sunglasses and car while Burnett complains he doesn't while eating take-out food. Of course, this introduces a conflict (not the main conflict, the case) between the characters because they have major differences about their lives and perspectives.

Avenger Infinity Wars Opening

Avenger Infinity Wars opens with a setting of Thano's ships, presenting the conflict. The mood is dark and gloomy through the use of darkening the scene with mainly black, dark blue and purple hues. The light that is shown at the start is from the fire in the corner of the frame which indicates a conflict and chaos. Thano's is originally shown as a silhouette, so the teenage and adult viewers only hear his voice and see his figure. As he walks forward with Thor in his hand, we are shown his face and Gauntlet. There is only one stone on it with missing wholes presented on it, indicating his goal is to find the rest of them. The bodies and fire predicted shows that he will do whatever it takes to get what he wants, giving off some information about him. The purpose of this opening is to present the conflict at the beginning with one of the Marvel known characters, Thor, to create a connection to the viewers. It encourages them to continue to see if he survives and if he seeks revenge.

Jurassic Park Opening

The purpose for this opening is to introduce the main conflict of the story line while introducing a continuous tone. It begins with dark music and sounds to elaborate on the dark tone presented, causing the viewers to be engulfed immediately on what is about to happen. The ruffling of leaves and roars adds to this effect as well. Throughout the scene, darker colors and shades are displayed to create an eerie feeling, leading to the conflict which is not explicitly presented. Since the audience is unaware of what remains within the box, the sounds are enhanced along with other visuals. Every person on sight contains a weapon, indicating the creature is dangerous. This is later validated when the gatekeeper is taken into the cage and unable to be saved. There are points where the point of view is switched to the creature, showing some of the workers scared as they look at it and its "roaring" sound is heard. There is a close up ending the scene with the yellow eye of the creature and shifting to the eye of the person giving the orders. This gives the audience a glimpse of the dinosaur, the main conflict, and its capabilities. It convinces the teenage and adult viewers to continue watching to know what other creatures there are and how they are stopped.

The Journey to Adventure

Have you even seen an adventure movie?

Well of course, because they are embedded within action, animation, drama and thriller movies. So even if you think you haven't, you most likely have.

Characteristics

For starters, the name gives away a decent bit of the story line: a fast paced journey filled with excitement to fulfill a mission or goal. The journey can vary from a quest or maturing themselves or developing an understanding towards a situation. Either way, the protagonist always shows growth within their journey and conquers something valuable. The continuation of the story contains the protagonist enduring risks: life-or-death situations. These scenes are action pact which is followed by faster editing. Depending on the associated genre with adventure, the location can change from familiar to unique. For instance, Harry Potter is also considered fantasy, therefore, the setting of Hogwarts is unfamiliar to the viewers. On the other hand, Miss Congeniality 2, is also considered action, therefore, the setting of Las Vegas is familiar to the viewers. The variation in scenes also inflicts tone shifts ranging from anticipation and suspense to relief and satisfaction. The consistency between switching moods captivates the viewers to continue watching, encouraging them to find out the ending of the protagonist. Even if they already know what is going to happen, we still need that validation and security how it ends.

Examples

Since adventure films are also incorporated into other genres, the target audience fluctuates along with the themes.

Finding Nemo is animation and adventure where their main audience was children. The theme focused towards the importance of family and building trust. While Nemo went on a journey outside of the ocean, Marlin tried to follow find his son but required the trust of others to do so within the ocean. Marlin is not only able to trust more but becomes more social towards other species: sea turtles, sharks and other fish

Harry Potter is fantasy and adventure which appeals to teenagers and adults. The series shows the evolution of Hogwarts, Harry Potter and his friends. Each movie has a common goal, to defeat what is causing harm to Hogwarts and their family, which they eventually find it to be Voldemort. The themes for the series are being courageous, building friendships and knowing good from bad.

Miss Congeniality 2 is action and adventure where their target audience is teenagers and adults. The journey is to solve a case but along the journey, both Agent Hart and Agent Fuller learn to trust each other, putting their differences aside to solve the case. As they endure risky situations, they are able to focus on what is important to both of them, being an agent and finding Miss USA, in Las Vegas. The fluctuation between tones of relief, anticipation and heart-felt moments captivate the audience.

Music Marketing

Pop music is one of the most well known genres which has evolved over the years. Along with this evolution, the trends in marketing must follow as well to continue captivating their teenage and young adult audience.
Marketing and distributing through vinyl and CD's are not going to have a great advancement on an artists career anymore, everything is digital where the audience can get the information straight from their cell phones. It has been proven that social media has been a necessary form of social media ranging from Facebook to newer apps such as TikTok. It allows viewers to get their information straight from the artist and get different clips. Clips meaning video teasers of the upcoming music video for the artist. These "coming soon" clips and countdowns from its release on YouTube draw the attention and excitement for their fans as well as encourages them to watch it minutes into its release. Another method of pop marketing is branding, some artist brand through symbols or colors. For example, Billie Eilish is a newer singer who has become popular within a short amount of time. She was branded through the use of the color combination of black and green. This ranges from her hair, clothes and even her website. This color combination is unique to her and attracts further attention to her and her songs. She gains more fans through the use of collaborations as well as Zedd. Being able to collaborate with other artist draws more attention from both fan groups which leads to a larger fan group. The other techniques are still used to advertise the upcoming song and music video as well. Zedd was able to get his song "Breaking Free" with Ariana Grande to 4th on the HOT 100s. Lastly, websites are presented for each artist so their fans stay update with tour dates, meet and greets, photo gallery's, social media information and merchandise. Some artists like Billie Eilish add interactive mediums on their website. Billie has a tour of her room which intrigues her younger fans base. It also allows their fans to further support them by being able to purchase their merchandise.
These colors express his irony of love/ anger towards it, stability, independence and his focus on making music. This is expressed through his website, social media page, merchandise and his music video. His website we decided to make easy for his teenage viewers to access. They can easily get to his YouTube channel where the music video is presented, TikTok, SnapChat and Instagram. They will also be able to purchase some of his merchandise: long sleeve shirts, hoodies, and his album. We plan to later add an interactive section on his website of a tour of his room where each part that is clicked on expresses his inspiration for each of his songs. It allows his fans to get a better insight of himself and what influences his songs. We decided on the social media accounts of Instagram, SnapChat and TikTok because they focus more towards the target audience of teenagers and young adults. Instagram has about 72% of users that are between thirteen and seventeen years old out of there 116 million users in the United States. Here we will present behind the scenes photos, 'coming soon' clips, and tour dates. On SnapChat, we plan to create a filter which can be activated through QR codes we place on posters locally. The filter will stay consistent with his color scheme and bring more attention to his music since SnapChat has 69% of their users are teenagers. Since TikTok is a newer and more popular social media, we plan to utilize this by getting our song as an option TikTokers can dance to. We will also draw more attention to his pages as he participates within these dances and does live streams.
Music is mainly presented on streaming sights because it is free, fast and is at the palm of their hands. With this knowledge, we plan to distribute his music through YouTube, Apple Music and Spotify. Spotify is a popular streaming base along with Apple Music but Spotify also provides ads. This would allows us to further advertise his new music through Spotify adds to advance how many people stream his songs. YouTube is has a wide variety of viewers where 85% of them are teenagers which attracts our target audience. It is the main forum to post music videos and cover of songs as well.
Throughout the duration of this project, I learned that we had so many ideas for a video but needed to stay consistent with one which was slightly difficult. We kept to our story line of the stages of grieving over a break up and wanted to expand on our creativity. In order to create the explosion of colors, we tested out multiple methods which majority failed but we continued to try until we found an answer. It took longer than I anticipated to film but were able to film in a timely manner. This also created a perfect opportunity for a photo shoot to expressing his brand of colors and behind the scenes photos for his marketing campaign. I also found it fairly difficult when doing the marketing campaign for Jay Moon. It is complex to have him stand out in a growing industry of artists which use the same digital methods to engage their audience.
