Action movies are known to be thrilling, intense, and fast paced with high energy. These films follow with loud sound tracks that become rousing and overpowering. The plot proceeds with the protagonist becoming the hero as he/she sets out on a goal or mission. They face incredible odds and outcomes that can result in car chases, fights, and a variety of stunts to achieve their goal and defeat the "villain." The content tends to have a male lead as the hero which is followed by a female accomplice or romantic interest.
This content engages viewers from the teenage years exceeding to mid thirties. Teenage viewers are captivated by the adrenaline and the fast paced plot. As viewers age, the ideal for the adrenaline decreases as well as the plot interest. The violence and usually impossible stunts draw the attention of the male viewers.
Some production techniques used within action films are the use of location. They are set at recognizable areas such as the movie Rush Hour 3 took place in Paris near the Eiffel Tower. It draws the attention of viewers to familiarize themselves with the ares. The realistically of the scene is transferred through special effects to be as normal to everyday environments as possible. They are also used when a stunt is too dangerous practically but creates that effect through the screen.There is also the use of contrast which is greatly manipulated to create suspense and thrill such as increasing highlights and decreasing shadows to make them more prominent. It adds the dramatic feel as well as engages the audience as to what will happen next. This dramatic feel continues to the use of tight close-ups adds to the suspense and enlarges the characters reactions which progresses the plot.
The use of famous actors such as Tom Cruise, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Jackie Chan, and Vin Diesel are used mainly for marketing purposes. Due to the fact they are popular and well known action film actors, viewers are more likely to want to watch the incoming movie and be engaged. In the trailers, they use the fighting scenes to add the adrenaline in the trailer to encourage viewers to want to know what happens. The overall plot and characters are expressed but the main visual point is the fighting scenes and the use of special effects.
In the film The Avengers: End Game, the group of protagonists (Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow, etc.) continue in their journey to fight Thanos, evil demigod who wiped out most of the population, and his army from retrieving the infinity stones. It enlightens the aspects of fighting with the use of martial arts and a variety of weapons in multiple scenes. The characters face an array of obstacles such as creating a time machine and sacrificing a member of their team to retrieve one of the stones. There is also an immense use of special effects for the weapons used, the portals for Dr. Strange and creating the realism of the cities, towns and buildings. This movie contains many scenes with loud sounds and tracks to engulf the audience into the fighting scenes. There is also multiple close-ups to display reactions and further progress the plot. The contrast is manipulated to create darker tones at times for suspense and tension.
In Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones sets out to Egypt to find the Lost Ark for the museum before the Nazi's get a hold of it. His female accomplice and romantic interest, Marion, accompanies him but gets captured along with the ark by the Nazi's. Indiana Jones goes through series of obstacles to retrieve both Marion and the ark. This movie is presented in action because of the dangerous stunts presented such as trying to climb on a moving truck and fight off the Nazi's while doing so. He also avoid a plane explosion and escapes after being buried underground with his worst fear, snakes. Along with this, there are multiple special effects to create the realism of Egypt and the digging sites for the ark. The use of extensive shadows adds to the dramatic effects and intensity of the plot at times.
